In April 2009 my wife and I made a life changing trip to Turkey. It turned out to be a pilgrimage of sorts, since we are Christians and Turkey is rich with biblical sites. Many Christians do not associate Turkey with the Bible, but imagine the excitement and anticipation we felt as we left one biblical landmark and headed to another.
Ephesus, Laodicea, Colossae, Smyrna, Miletus, and other New Testament cities were all part of our amazing nine day journey. The ancient city of Ephesus was one of the most incredible places I have ever been. It was almost too much to take in. However, the ruins were not what made us want to return to Turkey. It was the people.
Turks are at the top of our list for the most hospitable people in the world. Our travels have taken us to about 30 countries over the years, but Turks are in a league of their own. Our small group of six people drank coffee and tea, ate way too much fresh food, and spent hours sitting around the table talking with locals. Everywhere we went it was the same. Hours on end talking and getting to know each other. When we left, hugs and kisses and tears accompanied us all. Many of our new friends sent us out with gifts.
We returned home and after much prayer we decided to uproot from the beautiful East Tennessee Smoky Mountain region and relocate to Turkey. Yes, we really did!
As I write this page, we are still in the process of finalizing our plans to move. Our arrival in Turkey is scheduled for February 2011. After we settle in our plans are to spend as much time as we can with the Turkish people. We would love to introduce American Christians to the people of Turkey. Like I said, Turks are among the nicest people you will ever meet. Beginning in late 2011 we hope to do just that.
Proclamation Expeditions is not a business, it is two people living in Turkey attempting to connect American Christians with Turkish culture, Turkish people, and to enjoy seeing biblical history right before their eyes. The Apostle Paul was born in Turkey and spent years traveling throughout. Come and make the journey of a lifetime as we follow in his steps.
When you sign up for a Proclamation Expeditions pilgrimage you are signing up to change lives. We guarantee that one of them will be your own.
